GEMSTONES AND BIRTHSTONES

 RUBY - JULY BIRTHSTONE

Talking about the King of gems, the Ruby, Its rare existence make it fetch very high prices. It is extremely durable and can be found with minimum inclusions. A Ruby also belongs to the Corundum family and is simply a red Sapphire.

It makes a very fine gift and owners have often handed it down from generation to generation. The pigeon blood ruby can be found mainly in Burma. presently known as Myanmar. They are also found in small quantities in Srilanka, Pakistan, Nepal and Vietnam. Since Myanmar is now under communist control, Burmese Rubies are not freely available. However, Diamonds are freely available, in all shapes, sizes and price. But blood-red rubies are very rare indeed. Many people do not know that large rubies cost even more than diamonds of the same size!

The Ruby also exhibits asterism. A Star Ruby on a ring is a wonder to behold.

When you consider buying a Ruby, you must be careful. Even the royalty of England have been duped, for the Crown Jewels of England has a large red stone called The Black Prince's Ruby. Until a few decades ago everyone thought it was a Ruby until it's authenticity was questioned.

Black Princes RubyOn testing it, they found it to be a Red Spinel, masquerading as a Ruby. However, it still retains its ancient name. I cannot imagine anyone suggesting that it be called "Black Prince's Spinel".
